Old-growth redwood is generally considered to be from trees over 200 years old. The wood is all heartwood and extremely resistant to decay and insect attack. Because the trees grew in a competitive environment, their growth was slow creating very tight grain. This means there are normally at least 10 to 30 annual growth rings visible in an inch of wood! The reclaimed redwood I used to make this bottle cap opener had approximately 30 annual growth rings in an inch.                 

During stabilization, resin is drawn into the wood structure while under vacuum. The resin is cured with heat and imparts strength and density to the wood. As a natural product, there may be minor imperfections visible in the wood. I use an oil/shellac/wax friction finish on my wood bottle cap openers to allow the wood to retain the warmth and feel of wood.

The black accent rings on this bottle opener were created by carefully applying a wire to the surface of the rapidly rotating piece. The checked pattern is created in a similar manner by applying a specialized tool to the rotating piece.

304 Grade stainless steel is comprised of at least 50% iron with no more than 0.08% carbon. With that much iron content it would seem the material would be subject to corrosion. Yet, it is the elements represented by the second set of numbers, 18/8, that chemically protect the iron. The 18/8 designation refers to how much chromium and nickel respectively are present in the stainless steel.  In example, 18/8 stainless steel has 18% chromium and 8% nickel. The chromium acts to bind oxygen to the object's surface thereby protecting the iron from the process of oxidation. This protection is enhanced by the presence of nickel. The greater the nickel content, the greater the corrosion resistance.
