I turned the barrel of this pen from from stabilized black ash burl wood. The burl is a lumpy growth on the tree caused by the stress of a virus, insect, or fungus. If you imagine normal wood grain as straight pieces of yarn, a burl is a balled and knotted mess of yarn. Its convoluted grain is difficult to turn and subject to fracture. For this reason, the burl wood has been stabilized. During the process of stabilization, punky or friable wood is submerged in a chamber with a special liquid resin and subjected to vacuum. Over several hours, the vacuum pump withdraws any air inside the wood. As the air is withdrawn from the wood, the liquid resin and any dye penetrate the wood. After soaking overnight, the liquid resin saturating the wood is hardened at approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit. After cooling, the now denser and harder burl wood is ready for turning or pressure casting.
